Health tourism in Turkey attracts 100,000 foreign visitors

In recent years, Turkey has invested in their health sector. This sector attracts foreigners and is responsible for contributing millions to health tourism. According to a representative of the sector, the most up-to-date figures from the health tourism industry are set to exceed the figures produced in 2019.

Erkan Ucar, the Chairperson of the Dental Supplies Industry and Businessmen’s Association (DISSIAD), reported that the number of foreigners in 2020 choosing Turkey for dental treatments reached 100,000 and this figure is set to increase gradually when the world returns to normal after the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, Ucar said: “We expect at least a 15% increase.” He went on to explain that Turkey made significant investments in the past ten years in the health tourism sector and as such, the sector has shown impressive growth performance over the past five years and is up by 25%.

Despite numbers falling in 2020 due to COVID-19, the sector is expected to gather momentum thanks to the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations worldwide, as well as the reinstatement of international flights. Ucar went on to say that: “We expect the transaction volumes to exceed 2019 figures in 2021.”


Health tourism advantages

Ucar pointed out that Turkey offers many health tourisms advantages such as: “Being a tourism country, having advanced technologies, trained dentists and price advantages in treatments, are the main reasons why our country is being preferred.” He also added that whitening treatments, aesthetic dental fillings, orthodontics, implants, smile aesthetics, aesthetics lamina, and dental protheses are the treatments that attract foreign customers.


Patient satisfaction and future projection

When it comes to patient satisfaction, over 90% of people are completely happy with the treatment they received in Turkey. The country’s health tourism target is currently set at 10 billion USD with the dental field expected to reach 2.5 billion USD. Ucar said: “It is understood how important health tourism and dental health tourism are.”

In Turkey, it is the capital Ankara, southern Antalya, northwestern Yalova, eastern Erzurum and the western Izmir provinces that are at the forefront of health tourism in the country in general. Izmir, southwestern Mugla, Antalya and Istanbul that are leaders in dental health.

Turkey is currently one of the top 10 countries worldwide when it comes to health tourism, and this sector is amongst those that have shown the largest growth in a five year projection published by Forbes.
